Sixties furniture by Eero Aarnio

Ball Chair

The Bubble chair was designed by Eero Aarnio in 1968 in Finland. It is made of acrylic or steel frame and leather or polyurethane fabric cushions. It is distributed by Adelta. The chair is suspended from above leading to a floating or bubble-like sensation. It is considered an industrial design classic and advanced the usage of plastics in furniture design. The chair is considered modernist or spaceage and is often used to symbolise the 1960s period.

The Ball Chair - or Globe Chair as it's called sometimes - was designed by using one of the simplest geometric forms - the ball.

One year after he had designed the Pastil Chair in 1968 Eero Aarnio received the American Industrial Award for this chair. The New York Times wrote about the Ball Chair and Pastil Chair at this time: "the most comfortable forms to hold up the human body", and the Conran's Design Dictionary says "they look like essays in period style, perhaps from Barbarella".
