Many artists working in the 1960s questioned the
rules and assumptions of traditional art forms. In particular, artists often
sought to test the limits of what could be considered a painting. “Op” artists
(short for Optical) were interested in capturing a sense of movement within a
stationary two-dimensional plane, such as the surface of paining. Op artists created
optical illusions, often using only black and white paint to import the
impression of pattern, hidden images, and movement.
